Calling all Nature Superheroes!

Take a wild adventure with our nature discovery trail in this wonderful woodland garden. Discover what flutters, flies, crawls, grows and blooms here and help some wildlife along the way with seed sowing and nature recordings. With bug hunting, bird spotting, nature crafts and storytelling there’s lots of fun for all the family.

Earn yourself a nature medal for your efforts too!

Drop in between 12 and 4 pm. Enter via Canaan Lane for the welcome area at the WRVS cafe, trail guide, cafe and toilets. Register for free here.

Nature Recording and Walks (16+)

Experience a nature recording day at Astley Ainslie Hospital woodland garden. See naturalists at work recording different species and creating a map of the wildlife on the day.
Book onto a nature walk:

  • Get to Know your Garden Birds with RSPB expert Brian Robertson, 11am – 12 noon. Find out what birds live in the woodland gardens of Astley Ainslie and learn some identification tips.  
  • Urban Edibles with ecologist Dr Ian Edwards, 2-3 pm. A beginners guide to what is good, safe, nutritious and free in the City.  Led by ecologist, Dr Ian Edwards.   

Spaces limited, free, booking essential    

  • Walking with Trees with forester Willie McGhee
  • Mindfulness in Nature with Michele Hipwell

      (free, sign up on the day, first come first served)

Getting to the Event

The best entrance is via Canaan Lane with the event welcome area adjacent to this entrance. The Canaan Lane entrance is a short walk/cycle from Morningside Road. Bus numbers 5, 11, 15, 16, 23 stop on Morningside Road. Limited parking is available on side streets. Priority car parking on site is for hospital staff and visitors.
